CHAPTER 7
"You're home early" Julius said as Lisa changed into her slippers by the door. "I'm hungry" Lisa said wearily. "Wash your hands and face, I made you lunch" Julius said, standing from where he was on the dining chair. "Thank you" Lisa said and headed for her room. As Julius went to the kitchen, he knew definitely that Lisa wasn't in a good mood at all, her saying of thank you was a sign to that, she never said a thank you to him, and if she ever did, it was with a smile on her face, or at least an almost mocking look. He wondered if she told Caleb about their moving.
"What's wrong?" Luke asked, bending beside Caleb who was holding Florence. "I'm not sure, buh she's fainted, I suppose" Caleb said, unsure what to do. " What's wrong?" Ella asked,as she and Patience stood before them. As Caleb and Luke looked up at Ella and Patience, George Sandford came from the other side " What's the matter?" He asked. " Florence" Caleb said, still holding Flo. " Move" George bent over " I'll take her to the clinic" he added as he carried Flo. " Thank you" Caleb said. " I hope she's okay" Luke said as Ella and Patience followed behind George.
Caleb and Luke entered the class. "Have you seen Lisa around?" Caleb asked, turning to Luke. She left on her bike" Luke said. Caleb looked surprised, " She doesn't leave this early" He said. " She seemed off today" Luke said." Yeah" Caleb agreed.
Lisa came out of her room in a black top and blue jean trousers. Julius came out of the kitchen, holding a covered plate of food. Lisa sat by the dining table and Julius placed the plate in front of her then sat beside her. " Lisa" Julius called. Lisa turned to him in response. " Are you sad?" Julius asked
"Not so much, only a little" Lisa shrugged.
Julius nodded " Did you tell Caleb about moving?"
Lisa turned to the plate in front of her and removed the covering plate "I wasn't able to" She said and picked a fork from the little bowl at the center of the table.
"Lisa" Julius called again. Lisa put the fork in her food and looked at him. "If it was bad, mom won't make us do it, you know that?" Julius said. Lisa closed her eyes for a quick two seconds "I know that..." She said and looked at her food again, her brother's face was too gentle or maybe too pitiful for her to look at "...but it's still sad" She added, she could feel the lump in her throat. She took a quick glance at her brother again and added "At least I learnt something"
"What did you learn?" Julius asked. Lisa moved the fork on her plate "Don't put your happiness in people, when you leave them, you leave your happiness in them, but God is everywhere, you can put your happiness in Him" She said.
Julius smiled a little. " That's quite smart, I learned too" He said. Lisa smiled a little too, Julius'smile was one thing she couldn't ignore. " Eat up, we have to start packing" Julius said as he stood from his seat.
Fiona entered the school clinic ward room with Ella and Patience. There were two beds buh only one was occupied. As they entered, Flo sat up. "Are you okay Flo?" Her mother asked as she took a quick sit beside Flo. "I'm okay now, mother" Flo said. Fiona nodded "Did you take something cold recently, it's been three years since this last happened" Fiona said. " Sorry to bother you mother" Flo said as her mother assisted her to stand up. "We should postpone our visit to the cinema" Ella said "it will be better for you to rest" Patience added. Flo looked at the girls, "Thinking of it now, I really don't like cinemas" Flo said. She turned to her mother who was holding her, "Let's go, mother" She said. Fiona smiled, "Thanks for the worry" she said to Ella and Patience then took her daughter out. Ella and Patience seemed a bit dumfounded, "What's that about?" Patience asked. Ella's shrugged.
"It's Friday, it's not like you have anything doing" Luke said to Caleb. Caleb was standing in front of Luke's desk, from there, he could see Lisa's head bowed on he desk. " I really don't want to go, I won't be playing anyway, all I do is watch" Caleb said. " Then cheer me on" Luke said. " You'll do well even without my cheering. Bye, I'll see you another time" Caleb smiled a little and patted Luke's shoulder before leaving him. Luke waved at him and left the classroom.
Caleb stood in front of Lisa's desk. He planned on knocking initially, buh he Changed his mind since she hadn't been in the mood for a longer while since he had known her. Caleb turned a chair opposite her and sat."Lisa" He called. Lisa opened her eyes and raised her head. "You didn't knock the table" She said. "You don't like me doing that" Caleb replied. "Since when did you care?" Lisa said.
"Are you okay? You left too early yesterday, and you were a bit out of mood today" Caleb said.
" I'm sad" Lisa shrugged
" And, you're never this honest with your answers. Why? Girl stuff?" He asked.
Lisa looked at him sternly, " What girl stuff?" She asked.
"I don't know, you're the one who keeps on going about Girl stuff" Caleb eyed her. "Then let me be the one to keep saying it" Lisa smirked.
Caleb ignored her " Why are you sad?" He asked.
Lisa thought for a while. "What's your favorite restaurant in Tegavis?" She asked. Caleb looked surprised by the sudden change of topic. " Hurry up and answer" Lisa raised her tone.
" Maximus" He said
"Are you saying that to make me feel good?"
" No, I like the sight of it and the food's good too"
Lisa nodded slowly, " Okay, let's have lunch there today" She smiled.
Caleb stared at her.
She stopped smiling " Why are you staring?"
"Your smile's not genuine enough" He seemed a bit concerned. " Are you that sad?"
Lisa hated his look for that moment, and if she wasn't careful, he'd make her cry. Lisa sighed, "Will you go to Maximus with me?" She asked.
"Does it have to be there?" Caleb asked
"You said it was your favorite restaurant"
" Will you say why you're sad?"
" Yes, let's go" Lisa stood up with her bag
As Lisa drove them to Maximus, Caleb kept wondering whatever reason why Lisa wa ssad. From her look, one couldn't really tell she was sad, bub he knew it.she wasn't always cheerful, bub she wasn't always sad too, and this was basically the longest he'd seen her sad. Flo had said she was sad along time after her father's death, buh he didn't know her then.
They got into Maximus and chose a table, Caleb's eyes fixed on her all the while. Not long after sitting, a waitress appeared, dressed in the uniform- a white top and cream trousers and a deep blue apron. "Good afternoon, what would you have?" She asked. From behind the waitress, Lisa saw her mom and waved, Caleb's heart skipped a beat, he was always afraid of meeting Lisa's mother whenever he was with Lisa. Ruth approached them, smiling "You're here today" She said. "I brought Caleb for lunch" Lisa said with a little smile. Caleb wondered if Lisa was perhaps trying to provoke her mother. Ruth turned to Caleb, she hadn't noticed him. " Caleb" she called, a little tight lipped. " Good afternoon Mrs Obla" Caleb said, it was as if Lisa had something on her mother that made Mrs Obla give him even a fake smile. It could be because it was her restaurant, buh then, anyone who knew the Oblas and the Wests definitely knew that the parents didn't exactly have a smooth relationship. "Good afternoon" Mrs Obla replied. She turned to the waitress. "Give them whatever they want, it's on maximus" Sha said. "Yes ma'am" The waitress nodded. "Enjoy your meal" Ruth said to Lisa before leaving.
